NORTH WEST REGION EA DEADBAIT and LIVEBAIT BAN
DEFINITION OF LEGAL and
ILLEGAL BAITS
The SAA and its’ predator group
members, including PAC and the Eel groups, are fundamentally opposed to
the ban on live-baits and freshwater dead-baits
imposed on certain waters, by the North West Region of the Environment
Agency. Nevertheless we are publishing this guide
to which baits may still be used to clarify the confusion which exists on
this matter.
WATERS AFFECTED:
Bassenthwaite Lake, Brothers Lake,
Buttermere, Coniston Water, Crummock Water, Derwent Water, Ennerdale
Water, Haweswater, Loweswater, Red Tarn, Thirlmere, Ullswater, Wast Water
and Windermere.
LIVEBAITS
All banned
DEADBAITS
ALLOWED
Herring Sprat
Mackerel Sardine Horse
Mackerel (Scad)
Smelt Lamprey (Sea or
River, but not Brook Lamprey**)
Garfish Capelin
All are classified as sea fish and can
be used as bait in the lakes listed in the recently confirmed
byelaw.
DEADBAITS NOT
ALLOWED
Salmon Trout (Rainbow,
Brown etc) Sea
Trout Pollan
Brook Lamprey** All coarse fish, including
Roach and
Eel.
These are all banned
as baits on those lakes.
