OTTER PREDATION OF CARP FISHERIES
PROTECTIVE FENCING UPDATE
SAA commissioned some
research from Forest Research and The Otter Consultancy, and this
has been concluded. The object of this new investigation, which
was funded by the Environment Agency, was to establish the most
cost effective fencing to keep otters out of specimen still-water
carp fisheries. Many such waters have suffered severe predation
from otters, with fish to over 30lb killed. The proposed fencing
will be as unobtrusive as possible, with variations designed to
suit varying situations and soil types.
Comprehensive tests were
conducted at an otter sanctuary using different fencing materials.
The researchers also studied the practicalities of installation.
The results will be published at the Carp Show on March 19th and
20th at Five Lakes, Essex and then displayed on the SAA, www.saauk.org,
and EA websites. SAA will encourage feedback and interaction from
those owners protecting their fisheries.
Fishery managers should
be aware of the dangers of otter predation and consider the practicality
of protecting their fisheries. SAA encourage water controllers to
make themselves aware of the risks, and to study the research findings
to see how they can be applied to their waters.
SAA is indebted to the
EA for the funding to conduct this research, and to the commitment
and professionalism of Forest Research, The Otter Consultancy, and
the New Forest Otter, Owl & Wildlife Conservation Park.
